Smoothing with Sanding

Published in 3D Print Finishing 1 min read

To smooth out a 3D pen print, a common method is sanding the surface.

Smoothing a 3D pen print using sanding follows a process similar to sanding other materials. The key is to gradually refine the surface.

Here's how to do it:

  • Start with a Low Grit: Begin with coarse sandpaper (low grit number). This helps to remove larger imperfections and shape the print.
  • Work Your Way Up: Progressively switch to finer sandpaper (higher grit numbers). Each step with a higher grit smooths out the scratches left by the previous, coarser grit.
  • Achieve Desired Result: Continue moving to higher grits until you reach the desired level of smoothness for your 3D pen creation.
  • For Best Results: Going up to 200 grit sandpaper can create the best results in terms of surface finish. However, reaching this level of smoothness can be very labor intensive.

Sanding is a hands-on process that allows you to manually smooth and refine the contours and surfaces of your 3D pen art.
