Heparin is the anticoagulant used in arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis.
Why Heparin?
Several sources confirm heparin's exclusive use in preparing samples for blood gas analysis. Its role is to prevent blood clotting within the sample during the testing process. Different types of heparin, such as lithium heparin, are used; however, the crucial element remains the presence of heparin to maintain the integrity of the blood sample.
Potential Interference
It's important to note that even heparin, if improperly used, can interfere with the accuracy of ABG results. High concentrations or improper dilution (using liquid instead of lyophilized heparin) can skew the results. Therefore, proper technique and correct concentrations are crucial.
Other Anticoagulants
While heparin is the standard for ABG, other anticoagulants exist and have specific applications in other blood tests. These are not used for ABG analysis.
