To "ungroup" a single track in Ableton typically means either removing that track from an existing Group Track or ungrouping the entire Group Track it belongs to.
Here are the two primary ways to handle this, based on how Group Tracks work in Ableton Live:
Method 1: Remove a Single Track from a Group
If you want to take one specific track out of a Group Track while keeping other tracks within the group, the easiest method is to simply drag it.
Steps to Drag a Track Out of a Group:
- Locate the Group Track and the individual track you wish to remove.
- Click and hold the header of the individual track (the part with its name).
- Drag the track header downwards until you see a line appear below the Group Track's main track header and below the list of tracks currently inside that group.
- Release the mouse button.
The track will now be an independent track outside of the Group Track, placed directly below the group it was formerly part of. As the reference indicates, "tracks can be dragged into or out of the group."
Method 2: Ungroup the Entire Group Track
If you want to dissolve the Group Track entirely, reverting all tracks within it back to individual, independent tracks, you use the dedicated Ungroup command.
Steps to Ungroup the Entire Group:
- Select the Group Track you want to ungroup. You can do this by clicking its track header.
- Go to the Edit Menu at the top of the Ableton Live window.
- Select the Ungroup Tracks command.
As stated in the reference, "a group can be reverted back into individual tracks by executing the Edit Menu's Ungroup Tracks command." This action will dissolve the Group Track, and all the tracks that were contained within it will reappear as standard, ungrouped tracks in your Session or Arrangement View.
Important Note: While you can drag tracks out of a group one by one, using the "Ungroup Tracks" command from the Edit menu always applies to the entire selected Group Track, breaking it down into all its constituent parts simultaneously.
