Do actors use fake tears?

Published in Acting Techniques 1 min read

Yes, some actors use fake tears to help them cry on cue.

While many actors can cry authentically by tapping into real emotions, sometimes assistance is needed, especially when multiple takes are required or the scene demands immediate tears. According to reports, the makeup department often lends a hand to produce tears. These methods can include:

  • Eye drops: To create the appearance of tears.
  • Vaseline-based products: Applied under the eyes to simulate a teary look.
  • Menthol tear sticks: These irritate the eyes, causing them to water.

Even renowned actors like Cate Blanchett have used unconventional methods. She revealed she was taught to turn upstage and pull a nostril hair to induce crying. (08-Sept-2023)
