How Do I Resize a Page in Adobe Acrobat?

Published in Adobe Acrobat 3 mins read

You can resize a page in Adobe Acrobat primarily through the print settings or by using the "Preflight" tool (for more advanced control). Here's how:

Method 1: Resizing While Printing

This method resizes the page only for printing; it doesn't permanently alter the PDF's page size.

  1. Open your PDF in Adobe Acrobat.

  2. Go to File > Print (or use the shortcut Ctrl+P or Cmd+P).

  3. In the Print dialog box, locate the "Page Scaling" (or similar) option. This might be in a "Page Sizing & Handling" section.

  4. Choose one of the following options from the dropdown menu:

    • Fit: Enlarges small pages and reduces large pages to fit the paper size. This is a good general-purpose option.
    • Shrink oversized pages: Only reduces pages that are too large to fit on the paper. Smaller pages are printed at their actual size.
    • Actual Size: Prints the page without any scaling. Part of the page might be cut off if it's larger than the paper.
    • Custom Scale: Allows you to specify a percentage to scale the page. For example, entering 50% reduces the page to half its original size.
  5. Adjust other print settings as needed (e.g., paper source, orientation).

  6. Click Print.

Method 2: Using the Preflight Tool (For Permanent Resizing)

This method permanently changes the page size in the PDF file. It offers more control but requires an Acrobat Pro subscription.

  1. Open your PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  2. Go to Tools > Print Production > Preflight. If you don't see "Print Production", you might need to add it via "More Tools".
  3. In the Preflight dialog box, search for "Scale Pages".
  4. You'll find various preflight profiles related to page scaling. Select one that suits your needs, or create a custom profile. For example, you might find profiles to scale pages to a specific size or to scale proportionally.
  5. Click "Analyze and Fix". Acrobat will analyze the PDF and then apply the scaling based on the selected profile. You might be prompted to specify new dimensions or other parameters.
  6. Save the modified PDF. Choose "File > Save As" to save the scaled PDF with a new name and avoid overwriting the original.

Important Considerations:

  • Permanent vs. Temporary: The printing method only affects the printed output. The Preflight method permanently alters the PDF.
  • Acrobat Pro Required: The Preflight tool is only available in Adobe Acrobat Pro, which is a paid version. The standard Adobe Acrobat Reader does not include this feature.
  • Backup your PDF: Before using the Preflight tool to resize pages, it's always a good idea to create a backup copy of your PDF. This will allow you to revert to the original if the resizing doesn't produce the desired result.
