How to Duplicate a Frame in Adobe Animate

Published in Adobe Animate Frames 2 mins read

You can duplicate a frame in Adobe Animate using simple methods directly within the Timeline.

Duplicating frames in Adobe Animate is a common task used to extend the duration of a pose, repeat animation segments, or create variations without starting from scratch. Based on standard procedures and the provided references, there are two main ways to achieve this.

Method 1: Using Copy and Paste Frames

This method allows you to duplicate a single frame or an entire sequence of frames and place them anywhere in your timeline.

  1. Select the Frame(s): In the Timeline panel, click on the specific frame you want to duplicate. To select a sequence of frames, click the first frame, then Shift-click the last frame.
  2. Copy the Selection: Go to the application menu and select Edit > Timeline > Copy Frames.
  3. Select the Destination: In the Timeline panel, click the frame where you want the duplicated frame(s) to start. If you are pasting over existing frames, they will be replaced.
  4. Paste the Frames: Go to the application menu and select Edit > Timeline > Paste Frames.

This process effectively inserts a copy of your selected frame(s) into the chosen location on the timeline.

Method 2: Alt/Option-Dragging a Keyframe

This is a quicker method specifically for duplicating keyframes directly within the timeline panel.

  1. Locate the Keyframe: Find the keyframe you wish to duplicate in the Timeline panel. Keyframes are typically represented by solid dots (or other symbols indicating content changes) within a frame block.
  2. Drag with Modifier Key:
    • On Windows, hold down the Alt key.
    • On Macintosh, hold down the Option key.
  3. Drag and Drop: While holding down the modifier key (Alt or Option), click and drag the keyframe to the desired new location on the timeline.

As you drag, a copy of the keyframe will follow your cursor. Release the mouse button to place the duplicated keyframe. This method is particularly efficient for quickly copying poses or important frames.

By utilizing these methods, you can easily manage and duplicate content within your Adobe Animate projects, streamlining your animation workflow.
