How Do I Open a PSD File in Adobe Animate?

Published in Adobe Animate 2 mins read

To open a PSD (Adobe Photoshop) file in Adobe Animate, follow these steps:

  1. Select Import Option: In Adobe Animate, go to File > Import > Import To Stage or File > Import > Import To Library.

  2. Locate PSD File: A file explorer window will open. Navigate to the location of your PSD file.

  3. Select and Open: Select the desired PSD file and click OK (or Open, depending on your operating system).

  4. PSD Import Dialog: The "PSD Import" dialog box will appear. This is where you configure how the Photoshop layers, groups, and objects are imported into Animate.

  5. Choose Import Options: Within the PSD Import dialog box, you have several options:

    • Select Layers/Groups: Choose which layers or groups from the PSD you want to import.
    • Import as: For each selected item, you can choose how it's imported:
      • Animate layers: Each Photoshop layer becomes a separate layer in your Animate timeline. This is useful for maintaining individual elements.
      • Single flattened bitmap: The selected layers are flattened into a single bitmap image. This reduces the number of layers in Animate but makes individual editing impossible.
      • Editable text: Photoshop text layers are imported as editable text objects in Animate. This preserves the text's editability but may require font substitutions if the exact font is not available in Animate.
    • Maintain Layers: Decide whether to keep the layer structure as it is in Photoshop.
  6. Click OK: Once you've configured the import options, click OK to import the PSD file into Animate.

In summary, use the Import command, navigate to the PSD file, and then use the PSD Import dialog box to control how the file's content is brought into Animate.
