How Do I Rotate a Canvas in Adobe Animate?

Published in Adobe Animate 2 mins read

To rotate the canvas in Adobe Animate, you'll primarily use the Rotation tool. Here's how:

Using the Rotation Tool

  1. Select the Rotation Tool: Choose the Rotation tool, which is grouped together with the Hand tool (both share the shortcut key H). You might need to click and hold the Hand tool in the toolbar to reveal the Rotation tool. Alternatively, press Shift and Spacebar keys together to temporarily switch to the Rotation Tool while using another tool, such as the Brush.

  2. Identify the Pivot Point: Once the Rotation Tool is selected, you'll see a crosshair representing the pivot point for rotation on the screen. This point determines the center of the canvas's rotation.

  3. Rotate the Canvas: Click and drag anywhere on the stage to rotate the canvas around the pivot point. The canvas will rotate dynamically as you drag.

Adjusting the Pivot Point

  • The pivot point is initially located at the center of the canvas. You can reposition it by clicking and dragging the crosshair to a new location before you begin rotating. This allows you to rotate the canvas around a specific point of interest on your stage.

Alternative Method

While the primary method is using the Rotation tool, there are no standard features in Adobe Animate to precisely rotate the canvas itself as you might expect in other design software (like rotating an artboard). The Rotation tool manipulates the view of the stage.
