How Do I Add Depth to Text in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator Effects 2 mins read

You can add depth to text in Adobe Illustrator using the 3D Extrude & Bevel effect.

Here's how to add a 3D depth effect to your text:

  1. Select Your Text: Use the Selection Tool (V) to select the text you want to add depth to.

  2. Apply the 3D Extrude & Bevel Effect:

    • Go to Effect > 3D (Classic) > Extrude & Bevel. Note: The reference material uses 3D, not 3D (Classic), but the same principles apply.
  3. Adjust 3D Options: A new window will appear where you can customize the 3D effect.

  4. Position: Change the position to "Isometric Top" (or another preset that suits your needs) via the "Position" dropdown menu. This sets the viewing angle of the 3D text.

  5. Extrude Depth: Adjust the "Extrude Depth" value. This determines how far the text extends back, creating the 3D effect. The referenced video suggests a value around 78, but you can adjust this to your liking. Higher values create more depth.

  6. Other Settings (Optional): Explore other settings like:

    • Bevel: Add a bevel to the edges for a smoother, more rounded look.
    • Surface: Change the surface appearance (e.g., Wireframe, No Shading, Diffuse Shading, Plastic Shading).
    • Lighting: Adjust the lighting to change the shadows and highlights on the 3D text.
  7. Click OK: Once you're satisfied with the settings, click "OK" to apply the effect.

Now your text should have a 3D depth effect. Remember that you can always go back and edit the 3D Extrude & Bevel effect by selecting the text and going to the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance). Click on the "3D Extrude & Bevel" effect in the panel to reopen the options and make further adjustments.
