How do I copy a layer in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 2 mins read

You can copy a layer in Adobe Illustrator in a couple of ways: through the Layers panel menu or by dragging the layer to the "New Layer" icon. Here's a breakdown of both methods:

Method 1: Using the Layers Panel Menu

  1. Open the Layers Panel: If it's not already open, go to Window > Layers to display the Layers panel.

  2. Select the Layer: In the Layers panel, click on the name of the layer you want to duplicate. This highlights the entire layer.

  3. Duplicate the Layer:

    • Click on the Layers panel menu (the three horizontal lines in the upper-right corner of the panel).
    • Choose "Duplicate Layer."
  4. Verify the Copy: A new layer, named something like "Layer Name copy," will appear directly above the original layer in the Layers panel. This new layer contains an exact copy of all the artwork on the original layer.

Method 2: Dragging to the New Layer Icon

  1. Open the Layers Panel: Ensure the Layers panel is open (Window > Layers).

  2. Select the Layer: Click on the name of the layer you want to duplicate in the Layers panel.

  3. Drag and Drop: Click and drag the selected layer down to the "Create New Layer" icon (which looks like a plus sign inside a square) at the bottom of the Layers panel.

  4. Release and Verify: Release the mouse button when your cursor is over the "Create New Layer" icon. A copy of the layer will appear directly above the original.

Important Considerations:

  • The copied layer includes everything on the original layer – all objects, groups, and their attributes (e.g., colors, effects, transparency).
  • You can rename the duplicated layer by double-clicking on its name in the Layers panel.
  • If you need to duplicate multiple layers, select all of them before using either method. You can select multiple layers by holding down the Shift key (for contiguous layers) or the Ctrl or Command key (for non-contiguous layers) while clicking on the layer names.
