How do I import a gradient file in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 2 mins read

Here's how you import a gradient file into Adobe Illustrator:

  1. Open the Swatches Panel: In Illustrator, go to Window > Swatches to open the Swatches panel. If it's already open, ensure it's visible.

  2. Access the Swatch Library Menu: Click on the menu icon in the top right corner of the Swatches panel. This icon usually looks like three horizontal lines.

  3. Open Other Library: From the dropdown menu, select Open Swatch Library > Other Library... This will open a file browser.

  4. Locate and Open the Gradient File: Navigate to the location where your gradient file (.ai, .ase, or other compatible format) is saved, select the file, and click "Open."

  5. Gradients Appear in a New Panel: The gradients from the imported file will now appear in a separate swatch panel. You can then use these gradients in your designs.

Essentially, you're loading the gradient file as a swatch library. Remember that the imported gradients will appear in their own separate panel, not directly in your default swatches. From this separate panel, you can use the gradients and even drag them into your main Swatches panel if you want them readily accessible.
