How do I make a round pattern in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 2 mins read

There are several ways to create round patterns in Adobe Illustrator. Here's one easy method using circles and duplication:

  1. Start with a circle: Use the Ellipse Tool (L) to create a circle. Hold Shift while dragging to constrain proportions and create a perfect circle.

  2. Duplicate and Rotate:

    • Select the circle.
    • Use the Rotate Tool (R).
    • Alt-click (Option-click on Mac) on the center of your desired pattern to set the rotation point.
    • In the Rotate dialog box, enter the rotation angle. The angle determines how many repetitions you'll have in your pattern. For example, 360/10 = 36 degrees for 10 repetitions.
    • Click "Copy" to create a rotated duplicate of the circle.
    • Press Ctrl+D (Cmd+D on Mac) repeatedly to duplicate the transformation and create a full circular pattern.
  3. Creating a circle from the center of a circle and outwards:

    • Select the Ellipse tool.
    • Go to the center of the primary circle.
    • Hold Alt and Shift while dragging to create a circle from the center outwards.

You can adjust the size, color, and spacing of the circles to achieve different effects. You can also explore other techniques like using the Polar Grid Tool or creating a repeating pattern brush.
