How do I tint an image in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 2 mins read

To tint an image in Illustrator, you'll primarily work with the Fill or Stroke color options. Here's how:

  1. Select Your Image: Click on the image you want to tint using the Selection Tool (V).

  2. Access the Color Panel: Locate the Properties panel (Window > Properties). You'll see options for Fill and Stroke.

  3. Choose Fill or Stroke (Depending on Desired Effect):

    • For a complete tint, you'll usually work with the Fill. If you want to tint the outline of the image (assuming it has one defined with a stroke), you'd choose the Stroke.
  4. Open the Color Mixer: Click on the Fill (or Stroke) color swatch in the Properties panel. At the top of the panel that appears, look for the "Color Mixer" option. It might look like a color wheel or a gradient. Click it. This will display a single tint (T) slider.

  5. Adjust the Tint: Drag the Tint (T) slider to the left to lighten the color (creating a tint). Dragging it to the right will darken the color towards the original selected color.

Explanation:

The "Tint" slider controls the transparency of the color being applied over your image. Lowering the tint percentage makes the color lighter and more transparent, allowing more of the original image colors to show through.

Important Notes:

  • This method essentially applies a colored overlay to your image, creating the tint effect.
  • If your image already has a fill color applied, this method will modify that fill color's tint.
  • For more complex color adjustments, you might consider using the Recolor Artwork feature (Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Artwork), which offers finer control over color mapping.
