How Do You Divide Equally in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 2 mins read

To divide something equally in Adobe Illustrator, particularly a circle, you can use the rotate transform function in conjunction with a calculated angle.

Dividing a Circle into Equal Parts Using the Rotate Tool:

Here's how to divide a circle (or any shape around a center point) into equal parts:

  1. Create Your Circle: Use the Ellipse Tool (L) to draw a circle. Hold Shift while dragging to create a perfect circle.
  2. Create a Dividing Line: Use the Line Segment Tool (\) to draw a line that originates from the center of the circle to the edge. Make sure the line is perfectly aligned from the center outward. You can enable Smart Guides (View > Smart Guides) for easier alignment.
  3. Select the Line: Click on the line you just created.
  4. Open the Rotate Tool: Right-click on the line and go to Transform > Rotate.
  5. Calculate the Rotation Angle: In the Rotate dialog box, enter the rotation angle. The formula is: 360 / [Number of Parts]. For example, to divide the circle into 6 equal parts, you would enter 360/6.
  6. Click "Copy": Instead of clicking "OK," click the "Copy" button. This will create a rotated duplicate of the line.
  7. Repeat the Transformation: Press Ctrl+D (Windows) or Cmd+D (Mac) repeatedly to duplicate the rotated line the required number of times to achieve the desired divisions. You will need to duplicate it [Number of parts - 1] times. (e.g. for 6 divisions, repeat 5 times.)

This process creates evenly spaced lines originating from the center of the circle, dividing it into equal sections. You can then use these lines as guides or paths for further design elements.
