How do you rename in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 2 mins read

You can rename objects, layers, and artboards in Adobe Illustrator using different methods depending on what you want to rename.

Renaming Artboards

There are two primary ways to rename artboards:

  • On the pasteboard: Double-click the current artboard's name (located above the artboard itself on the pasteboard). This will open a text field where you can type the new name. Press Enter or click outside the text field to finalize the change.

  • In the Layers panel:

    1. Open the Layers panel (Window > Layers).
    2. Locate the artboard you want to rename.
    3. Double-click the artboard's current name in the Layers panel.
    4. Enter the new name for the artboard.
    5. Press Enter or click outside the text field.

Renaming Layers, Groups, and Other Objects

To rename layers, groups, paths, or other individual objects:

  1. Open the Layers panel (Window > Layers).
  2. Locate the layer, group, or object you wish to rename. You may need to click the small triangle next to layer names to expand and reveal nested objects.
  3. Double-click the name of the item you want to rename.
  4. Type in the new name.
  5. Press Enter or click outside the text field to confirm the change.

By using these methods, you can easily rename artboards, layers, and objects within your Adobe Illustrator documents to maintain organization and clarity.
