How to Create an Outline in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 3 mins read

To create outlines in Adobe Illustrator, you'll primarily use two methods: outlining strokes or converting text to outlines. Here's how to do both:

1. Outlining Strokes (Converting a Stroke to a Shape)

This method transforms the stroke applied to a path into a filled shape.

  • Step 1: Select the Object. Choose the object with the stroke you want to outline using the Selection Tool (V).
  • Step 2: Go to Object Menu. Click on "Object" in the top menu bar.
  • Step 3: Choose Path. From the dropdown menu, select "Path."
  • Step 4: Select Outline Stroke. Click on "Outline Stroke." This converts the stroke into a filled shape that follows the stroke's path. You can now edit it as a regular shape.

2. Creating Outlines from Text (Converting Text to Shapes)

This is crucial for sending files to printers or other designers who may not have the same fonts installed on their systems. Converting text to outlines essentially turns the text into editable shapes.

  • Step 1: Select the Text. Using the Selection Tool (V) or the Type Tool (T), select the text you want to outline.
  • Step 2: Go to Type Menu. Click on "Type" in the top menu bar.
  • Step 3: Select Create Outlines. Click on "Create Outlines." This converts the text into compound paths, which are essentially shapes that can be edited like any other vector graphic. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Ctrl + O (Windows) or Shift + Command + O (Mac).

Important Considerations:

  • Font Substitution: Creating outlines prevents font substitution errors. Without outlines, the recipient's computer may replace the font with a default one if they don't have the original font installed.
  • Editability: After creating outlines from text, the text is no longer editable as text. Keep a separate, non-outlined version of your file if you need to make text changes later.
  • Scalability: Outlined objects, including text, remain scalable without losing quality, making them ideal for logos and other graphics that need to be resized frequently.
  • Compound Paths: When you create outlines from text, each letter becomes a compound path. You may need to ungroup the letters (Object > Ungroup) to edit them individually.

By understanding how to outline strokes and text, you can ensure your Illustrator files are consistently displayed and easily editable by others, while also preserving the intended design.
