To measure in Adobe Illustrator, use the Dimension tool to create linear, angular, or radial measurements directly on your artwork.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Select the Dimension Tool: Locate the Dimension tool in the toolbar. It might be nested under other tools, so look for a ruler-like icon.

  2. Choose a Dimension Type: After selecting the Dimension tool, use the taskbar (usually at the top of the screen) to choose the type of measurement you need:

    • Linear Dimension Tool: Measures the straight-line distance between two points.
    • Angular Dimension Tool: Measures the angle between two lines.
    • Radial Dimension Tool: Measures the radius or diameter of a circle or arc.
  3. Create the Dimension Object:

    • Linear: Click on the starting point, then click on the ending point. Drag the dimension line away from the object to a desired distance and click to place it.
    • Angular: Click on the vertex (the point where the two lines meet), then click on each of the lines that form the angle. Drag the dimension arc to a desired distance and click to place it.
    • Radial: Click on the circle or arc. Drag the dimension line away from the object to the desired distance and click to place it.

    • Double-click on the Dimension tool icon in the toolbar. This will open the Dimension Tool Options panel.
    • In the panel, you can adjust various settings such as:
      • Measurement Unit: Change the unit to points, inches, millimeters, etc.
      • Line and Arrow Styles: Adjust the appearance of the dimension lines and arrowheads.
      • Text Properties: Change the font, size, and color of the dimension text.
      • Precision: Specify the number of decimal places to display.

    • Smart Guides (View > Smart Guides): Enable Smart Guides to help you accurately snap to specific points on your artwork while creating dimensions. This ensures precise measurements.
    • Info Panel (Window > Info): Use the Info panel to see real-time X and Y coordinates as you move your cursor, which can be helpful for determining precise starting and ending points for linear dimensions.
    • Transform Panel (Window > Transform): For precise object sizes and positions, the Transform panel can show dimensions of selected objects and allow for exact numerical adjustments. This doesn't create a visible dimension, but it provides numerical data.
    • Rulers (View > Rulers > Show Rulers): Use rulers as a visual guide to assist in accurately measuring objects and distances.
