To effectively manipulate the separate elements within a compound path in Illustrator, essentially converting it back into individual shapes, you need to release the compound path.
Steps to Release a Compound Path:
- Select the Compound Path: Using the Selection Tool (V), click on the compound path you want to modify.
- Release the Compound Path: Go to the "Object" menu in the top toolbar.
- Choose "Compound Path" then "Release": Navigate down to "Compound Path" and select "Release."
Once you release the compound path, the individual shapes that originally formed it will become separate objects again. You can then use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select and manipulate each shape independently. This allows you to change their individual fill, stroke, position, and more.
