To mirror an object in Adobe Illustrator, use the Reflect Tool or the Transform panel. Here’s how:
Using the Reflect Tool
-
Select the Object: Use the Selection Tool (V) to select the object you want to mirror.
-
Choose the Reflect Tool: Find the Reflect Tool (O) in the toolbar. It’s usually located under the Rotate Tool.
-
Set the Reflection Point:
- Click where you want the reflection to occur. This point will serve as the axis around which the object will be mirrored. To create a reflection across the center of an object, click on its center point.
- Alt/Option + Click to open the Reflect dialog box. This allows you to specify the axis (horizontal or vertical) and angle of reflection more precisely.
-
Reflect: After setting the reflection point, drag away from it to create the mirrored object. Hold down the Shift key while dragging to constrain the reflection to a perfect horizontal or vertical mirror. Alternatively, If you alt-clicked, specify the axis (Horizontal, Vertical) and Angle in the Reflect dialog box, and click "OK" to reflect the original object or "Copy" to create a mirrored copy.
Using the Transform Panel
- Select the Object: Use the Selection Tool (V) to select the object you want to mirror.
- Open the Transform Panel: Go to Window > Transform to open the Transform panel.
- Set the Reference Point: In the Transform panel, select the reference point. This is the point around which the transformation will occur.
- Use the Flip Options:
- To flip horizontally, click the "Flip Horizontally" icon.
- To flip vertically, click the "Flip Vertically" icon.
- Create a Copy (Optional): To create a mirrored copy rather than transforming the original, hold the Alt/Option key while clicking the "Flip Horizontally" or "Flip Vertically" icon.
Additional Information
Adobe Illustrator also offers a "Repeat" feature, including "Mirror Repeat," which can automatically create symmetrical designs.
