How to Use the Magic Wand Tool in Adobe Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 3 mins read

To use the Magic Wand tool in Adobe Illustrator, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Magic Wand Tool: Find the Magic Wand tool (icon resembles a wand with sparkles) in the Tools panel. You can also activate it by pressing the "Y" key.

  2. Choose Selection Options: In the Properties panel (Window > Properties), or the Control panel at the top of the screen, you'll see options that control what the Magic Wand selects. These include:

    • Fill Color: Selects objects with the same fill color as the object you click on.
    • Stroke Color: Selects objects with the same stroke color as the object you click on.
    • Stroke Weight: Selects objects with the same stroke weight as the object you click on.
    • Opacity: Selects objects with the same opacity as the object you click on.
    • Blending Mode: Selects objects with the same blending mode.
  3. Adjust Tolerance: The tolerance setting, available for each of the above selection criteria, determines how similar the attributes must be for an object to be selected. A lower tolerance selects only objects that are very similar, while a higher tolerance selects a wider range of objects. For example, a low tolerance for "Fill Color" will only select objects with almost the exact same color, while a higher tolerance will select objects with colors that are similar.

  4. Click on an Object: Click on an object in your artwork with the Magic Wand tool. Illustrator will then select all other objects in your artwork that match the criteria specified in the Properties/Control panel within the tolerance range.

  5. Modify the Selection: You can refine your selection using the following methods:

    • Add to Selection: Hold down the Shift key and click on another object to add it to the current selection.
    • Subtract from Selection: Hold down the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) key and click on an object to remove it from the current selection.

Example:

Let's say you have a design with numerous circles, some filled with pure red and others with slightly different shades of red. You want to select all the circles that are exactly pure red.

  1. Select the Magic Wand tool.
  2. In the Properties panel, ensure that "Fill Color" is checked and all other options are unchecked.
  3. Set the tolerance for "Fill Color" to a low value (e.g., 0 or 1) to select only exact matches.
  4. Click on a circle filled with the pure red color. Only circles with that specific shade of red will be selected.

The Magic Wand tool is a quick and efficient way to select multiple objects with similar attributes in Adobe Illustrator, making it useful for editing and manipulating specific elements within complex designs.
