How do you add shading in InDesign?

Published in Adobe InDesign 2 mins read

You can add shading to paragraphs in InDesign using the Paragraph Shading feature. This allows you to apply a background color to specific paragraphs.

Here's how:

  1. Select the Paragraphs: Use the Type tool to select the paragraph(s) you want to shade.

  2. Access Paragraph Shading Options: Go to the Control panel (at the top of your screen) or the Paragraph panel (Window > Type & Tables > Paragraph). Click the Paragraph Shading icon (it looks like a paragraph symbol with shading behind it). If you don't see it, you may need to reveal more options in the panel menu. Alternatively, you can go to Paragraph Styles (Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles), create a new style, or edit an existing one, and find the "Paragraph Shading" option in the Paragraph Style Options dialog box.

  3. Enable Shading: In the Paragraph Shading options, ensure the "Shading" checkbox is checked.

  4. Adjust Color and Opacity: Use the "Color" dropdown menu to select the desired shading color. You can adjust the opacity of the shading using the "Tint" percentage. Lower percentages will result in more transparent shading.

  5. Customize Shading: You can also adjust the offsets (Top, Left, Bottom, Right) to increase or decrease the area covered by the shading relative to the text.

Key Considerations:

  • The shading is applied behind the text in the paragraph.
  • Shading is part of the paragraph formatting, so if you apply a paragraph style, the shading settings will be part of that style.
  • Experiment with different colors and tints to achieve the desired effect.
