How Do I Cut an Image in Adobe XD?

Published in Adobe XD 2 mins read

To "cut" an image in Adobe XD, you'll actually use a process called masking. This allows you to display only the part of the image that falls within a specific shape. Here's how you do it:

Steps to Mask an Image in Adobe XD

  1. Choose Your Image: Import or create the image you want to "cut" into your Adobe XD project.

  2. Draw Your Shape: Use the shape tools (rectangle, ellipse, polygon, etc.) in Adobe XD to draw the shape you want to use as a mask. This shape will define the visible portion of your image. Ensure the shape is above the image in the Layers panel.

  3. Position the Image: Place the image behind the shape in the layer stack. Adjust the position of the image relative to the shape to determine which part of the image will be visible.

  4. Mask with Shape:

    • Select both the shape and the image. You can do this by clicking on the shape and then holding down the Shift key while clicking on the image (or vice versa) in either the design canvas or the Layers panel.
    • Right-click on the selected objects.
    • Choose "Mask with Shape" from the context menu. Alternatively, go to Object > Mask with Shape.

Result

The image will now be "cut" to fit the shape you created. Only the portion of the image that's within the bounds of the shape will be visible. The shape acts as a "window" revealing only that part of the image. You can move and resize both the shape and the image independently even after masking to achieve your desired effect. Double-clicking on either allows you to edit them separately within the mask.
