How to Fit an Outdoor Aerial?

Published in Aerial Installation 4 mins read

The key to fitting an outdoor aerial involves securely mounting it to a pole and then fixing the pole in a suitable location.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Attach the Aerial to the Mounting Pole:

    • Use the U-bolts, nuts, and washers provided with the aerial kit.
    • Position the aerial on the pole at the desired height and orientation.
    • Secure the U-bolts around the pole and through the mounting points on the aerial.
    • Tighten the nuts by hand initially. Don't overtighten them at this stage, as you might need to adjust the aerial's direction later for optimal signal reception.
  2. Secure the Mounting Pole:

    • Choose a Suitable Location: Consider factors like height (higher generally means better signal), accessibility for future maintenance, and proximity to your TV or receiver. Also, ensure the location doesn't obstruct anything and is structurally sound to support the aerial and pole in all weather conditions.
    • Attach the Bracket: Use a suitable bracket designed for mounting poles to walls, roofs, or other structures. The type of bracket will depend on the mounting surface. Common types include wall-mount brackets, roof mounts, and chimney mounts.
    • Secure the Bracket to the Structure: Use appropriate screws or bolts to securely attach the bracket to the chosen surface. Ensure the bracket is level and firmly fixed. For masonry surfaces, use masonry screws and wall plugs. For wooden surfaces, use wood screws.
    • Insert the Pole into the Bracket: Place the pole into the bracket and tighten any locking mechanisms or bolts to hold it securely in place. Ensure the pole is vertical.
  3. Adjust and Optimize the Aerial Direction:

    • Connect the aerial cable to your TV or receiver.
    • Turn on your TV and select the appropriate input channel for the aerial signal.
    • Slowly rotate the aerial until you achieve the strongest signal and best picture quality. You may need an assistant to monitor the signal strength on the TV while you adjust the aerial.
    • Once you have found the optimal direction, fully tighten all the nuts on the U-bolts securing the aerial to the pole. Also, double-check that the mounting pole is still secure in its bracket.
  4. Cable Management:

    • Run the aerial cable neatly from the aerial to your TV or receiver, securing it along the way with cable clips or ties to prevent it from dangling or getting damaged.
    • If the cable needs to pass through a wall, use a drill to create a small hole and install a cable grommet to protect the cable.
    • Ensure the cable connections are secure and weatherproofed if necessary.

Important Considerations:

  • Safety: Always prioritize safety when working at heights. Use a sturdy ladder and consider wearing a safety harness. If you are uncomfortable working at heights, it is best to hire a professional installer.
  • Local Regulations: Check local regulations regarding antenna installations, as there may be restrictions on height or placement.
  • Earthing/Grounding: Proper earthing is important for safety, particularly against lightning strikes. Consider connecting the aerial mast to earth. Consult an electrician for advice on proper earthing procedures.
  • Weatherproofing: Ensure all connections are weatherproofed to prevent corrosion and signal degradation.
