How do I center a center point in After Effects?

Published in After Effects Basics 2 mins read

You can center the anchor point (center point) of a layer in After Effects without plugins using the Pan Behind tool.

Here's how:

  1. Select the Layer: Choose the layer in your composition whose anchor point you want to center.
  2. Activate the Pan Behind Tool (Anchor Point Tool): Select the Pan Behind tool from the toolbar (it looks like a crosshair). The shortcut is Y.
  3. Snap to Center: With the Pan Behind tool active, hold down either Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and click and drag the anchor point. As you drag, the anchor point will automatically snap to the center of the layer, as well as to edges and corners.
  4. Shortcut alternative: If you have a full keyboard, there might be a more direct shortcut to quickly center the anchor point to the center of the layer. However, this depends on your After Effects version and custom settings.

By using the Pan Behind tool and the control/command key, you can quickly and accurately center the anchor point of any layer, ensuring proper transformations and animations.
