How do I Remove Effects from Multiple Layers in After Effects?

Published in After Effects Effects 2 mins read

You can easily remove effects from multiple layers in Adobe After Effects using keyboard shortcuts.

Methods to Remove Effects from Multiple Layers

There are two primary methods to remove effects from several layers simultaneously:

  1. Using Select All and Keyboard Shortcut:

    • Select all the layers you wish to modify. This can be done by pressing CTRL+A on a PC or CMD+A on a Mac.
    • After selecting all layers, press CTRL+SHIFT+E on a PC or CMD+SHIFT+E on a Mac. This action will remove all effects from the selected layers.
  2. Selecting Layers Individually and Using Keyboard Shortcut:

    • Select your layers individually. You can do this by clicking on each layer in the timeline while holding down the CTRL (PC) or CMD (Mac) key.
    • Once all desired layers are selected, use the same keyboard shortcut as above: press CTRL+SHIFT+E on a PC or CMD+SHIFT+E on a Mac. This will remove every single effect from the selected layers on your timeline.

Here’s a table summarizing the keyboard shortcuts:

Action Windows (PC) macOS (Mac)
Select All Layers CTRL + A CMD + A
Remove Effects CTRL + SHIFT + E CMD + SHIFT + E

Example Scenario:

Let's say you have multiple layers with effects like blur, color correction, and distort effects applied, and you want to quickly remove all of them. Using either of the methods above, you can clear all the effects off of the multiple layers simultaneously.

By using these shortcuts, you can streamline your editing process and avoid manually deleting effects from layers one at a time.
