How Do I Select a Point on a Mask in After Effects?

Published in After Effects Masks 2 mins read

To select a specific point on a mask in After Effects, follow these simple steps:

  1. Select the Layer: In the composition panel, click on the layer containing the mask you want to edit.

  2. Open Layer Panel (if needed): If the layer panel isn't visible, double-click the layer in the timeline to open it.

  3. Select the Mask: In the Layer panel or Timeline, find the "Masks" property and select the specific mask you want to work with.

  4. Select the Point: Hold down the Shift key and then click directly on the point you want to select on the mask path in the Composition panel. The selected point will highlight, indicating it is active.

Once the point is selected, you can move it, adjust its handles (if it's a Bézier point), or delete it.

Troubleshooting:

  • Mask Not Visible? Make sure the mask's visibility is enabled in the timeline (the eye icon next to the mask property should be on).
  • Layer Not Selected? Ensure the correct layer containing the mask is selected in the Timeline panel.
  • Mask Mode? Check the mask mode (Add, Subtract, Intersect, etc.). Sometimes a mask might be behaving unexpectedly because of its mode.
