Where is garlic grown?

Published in Agriculture 1 min read

Garlic is grown all over the world, with the largest producer being China, accounting for a whopping 73.8% of global production in 2021. Other major garlic producers include India, Bangladesh, South Korea, and Egypt.

In the United States, California is the leading producer, growing over 90% of the country's commercial garlic supply. Gilroy, California, is even nicknamed the "Garlic Capital of the World."

While the US produces a significant amount of garlic, a large portion of the garlic consumed in the US is imported from China, accounting for around 80% of the market.

Garlic thrives in well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. It requires full sun and can be planted in the fall for a harvest in the late spring or early summer.

While garlic can be grown in many parts of the world, it is particularly well-suited to regions with warm climates and long growing seasons.
