How do I restart my AirPods?

Published in AirPods Troubleshooting 2 mins read

To restart your AirPods, you'll typically reset them. Here's how to reset your AirPods or AirPods case depending on the model:

For AirPods (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation) and AirPods Pro:

  1. Place your AirPods in their charging case.
  2. Close the lid.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Open the lid.
  5. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the "i" icon next to your AirPods.
  6. Tap "Forget This Device," and tap again to confirm.
  7. With the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds. The status light should flash amber first, then eventually flash white.
  8. Your AirPods are now reset. You can reconnect them to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch by holding the case (with the AirPods inside and the lid open) near your device and following the on-screen instructions.

For AirPods Max:

  1. Charge your AirPods Max for a few minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Noise Control button and the Digital Crown simultaneously until the status light flashes amber, then release the buttons. This usually takes around 15 seconds.
  3. Your AirPods Max are now reset.

For AirPods 4 (Both Models):

  1. Put the AirPods in their case and close the lid.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid, then double-tap the front of the case three times. This process essentially simulates a reset similar to earlier models.
