To find an AirTag that is nearby, you will primarily use the Precision Finding feature within the Find My app on your iPhone.
Steps to Locate a Nearby AirTag
Finding a nearby AirTag using your iPhone is a straightforward process utilizing Apple's built-in features. Follow these steps:
- Go to the Find My app on your iPhone. This is the central application for tracking your Apple devices and AirTags.
- Tap Items at the bottom of the screen. This tab displays all the AirTags and third-party items you are tracking.
- Tap the nearby AirTag that you wish to locate from the list.
- Tap Find. This initiates the proximity finding process. Your iPhone will connect to the AirTag via Bluetooth.
- Do any of the following:
- Move closer to the AirTag: Your iPhone will start using Precision Finding (available on supported iPhone models) to guide you. Follow the onscreen instructions, which will show you the direction and approximate distance to the AirTag. As you move, the display will update, helping you narrow down its location.
- Play a Sound: You can also tap the sound icon to make the AirTag play a sound. This is particularly helpful if the AirTag might be hidden from view, like under a seat or in a bag.
- When you locate the AirTag, tap Done. Once you have successfully found the item the AirTag is attached to, tap this button to finish the finding session.
This process relies on Bluetooth technology to sense the proximity of the AirTag. Precision Finding, available on newer iPhone models (iPhone 11 and later), adds directional guidance using the U1 chip for ultra-wideband technology, making it even easier to pinpoint the exact location.
Remember that the effectiveness of Precision Finding depends on your proximity to the AirTag. It works best when you are within Bluetooth range, typically within a few meters. Obstacles can sometimes interfere with the signal.
