Is cold water good for allergies?

Published in Allergies 1 min read

Drinking cold water may worsen allergy symptoms, as it can thicken nasal mucus, making it harder to breathe. Warm or hot water may be more helpful in relieving allergy symptoms, such as those caused by a cold, flu, or nasal allergies.

Cold temperatures can also trigger allergic reactions in some people with a condition called cold urticaria. This condition causes itchy welts (hives) to appear on the skin after exposure to cold.

While cold water may not be the best choice for allergy sufferers, there are other ways to manage allergy symptoms, such as:

  • Using a humidifier: Adding moisture to the air can help to thin mucus and make breathing easier.
  • Nasal rinses: Using a saline solution to rinse out the nasal passages can help to remove allergens and irritants.
  • Avoiding triggers: Identifying and avoiding allergens is essential for managing allergies.
