How to Make Baby Aloe Plants?

Published in Aloe Propagation 3 mins read

There are two primary ways to make baby aloe plants: by separating pups from the mother plant, and by propagating from stem and leaf cuttings.

Propagating Aloe Plants from Pups

This is the most common and easiest method for creating new aloe plants. Aloe plants naturally produce "pups," which are small offshoots that grow from the base of the parent plant. Here’s how to propagate using pups:

  1. Choose large enough pups: Select pups that are of a decent size to ensure a higher survival rate after separation.

  2. Remove the whole plant from the pot: Gently take the entire aloe plant and its pups out of its pot. This provides better access for separation and is a less harmful way for the plants.

  3. Separate the pups: Carefully separate the pups from the mother plant. You may need a clean knife or your fingers. Make sure each pup has its own set of roots.

  4. Pot up those pups: Once separated, put the pups in their own pots filled with well-draining potting mix, which is specifically designed for succulents or cacti.

Propagating Aloe Plants from Stem and Leaf Cuttings

This method is less common and has a lower success rate than using pups, but is still a viable option if you don't have pups readily available.

  1. Cut off the parent plant: Cut a stem from the parent plant using a clean and sharp knife.

  2. Remove lower leaves: Remove the lower leaves from the cutting to promote root growth.

  3. Harvest the stem and leaf cuttings: Take cuttings from the stem and leaves. Make sure each cutting is several inches long.

  4. Wait for pups to grow: You have to wait for the cuttings to grow into new plants. Place the cut ends into the soil and water regularly to help them form their own roots and develop into independent plants.

Method Steps Success Rate
Pups 1. Choose large pups. 2. Remove the whole plant from the pot. 3. Separate the pups. 4. Pot up the pups. High
Stem/Leaf Cuttings 1. Cut off the parent plant. 2. Remove lower leaves. 3. Harvest the stem and leaf cuttings. 4. Wait for pups to grow. Lower

Both methods allow you to easily expand your aloe collection with new baby plants, which will provide more of the medicinal benefits and beauty of these wonderful succulents.
