How do you use aloe vera gel directly from a plant?

Published in Aloe Vera Usage 2 mins read

To use aloe vera gel directly from a plant, you'll need to extract it from a leaf. Here's how:

  1. Harvest a Leaf: If you have an aloe vera plant, select a mature outer leaf. Don't take too many leaves at once to avoid harming the plant.
  2. Cut the Leaf: Cut the leaf as close to the base as possible using a clean knife. Be mindful not to damage the rest of the plant.
  3. Drain the Latex: Once opened, let the yellow latex ooze out of the plant. This yellow liquid, also known as aloe latex, contains anthraquinones and has strong laxative properties, so it's best to drain it and avoid consuming it. You can do this by holding the cut end of the leaf downwards into a container for about 10-15 minutes. According to the reference, this latex isn't normally used.
  4. Fillet the Leaf:
    • Lay the leaf flat on a cutting board.
    • Use a knife or vegetable peeler to remove the green skin from both the top and bottom sides of the leaf.
    • You should now be left with the clear aloe vera gel.
  5. Collect the Gel: Cut the leaf open and you'll have more aloe vera gel than you can handle. Scoop out the clear gel with a spoon and transfer it to a clean container.
  6. Use the Gel: The gel is now ready to use. You can apply it directly to your skin for sunburn relief, minor cuts, or as a moisturizer.

Important Considerations:

  • Storage: Fresh aloe vera gel can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, consider freezing it in ice cube trays.
  • Potential Irritation: Although rare, some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to aloe vera. Test a small amount on your skin before applying liberally.
  • Internal Use: While some people consume aloe vera gel, it is best to research its potential effects thoroughly and consult with a healthcare professional before ingesting it.
