How do I add a board shape in Altium?

Published in Altium Board Design 2 mins read

To add a board shape in Altium, you'll typically define it from selected objects. Here's how you do it:

  1. Switch to 2D Layout Mode: Go to the View menu and ensure you're in 2D Layout Mode. This is essential for defining the board shape.

  2. Select the Objects that will define your Board Shape: Select all objects on the layer that represent the desired board outline. This can be done manually or more efficiently by using the Edit » Select » All on Layer command. Common objects used include lines, arcs, and fills.

  3. Define the Board Shape: With the objects selected, go to Design » Board Shape » Define from Selected Objects. Altium will use the selected objects to redefine the board shape. The display will update accordingly.

Important Considerations:

  • The objects you select should form a closed shape. Altium needs a continuous outline to properly define the board. If the objects aren't properly connected, you'll get an error.
  • Ensure that you're selecting objects on the appropriate layer. Typically, this will be a mechanical layer you've designated for the board outline (e.g., a layer named "Board Outline").
  • If you need to modify the board shape later, you can use the same method with different selected objects, or you can directly edit the board shape vertices in Board Planning Mode (View -> Board Planning Mode). This mode allows for more precise adjustments to the board outline.
  • Another method is to import the board shape from a DXF or DWG file using the File » Import command, then choose the appropriate file type. This is useful when the board shape is defined using CAD software. After importing, you may need to use the Define from Selected Objects command mentioned above.
