How do you secure safety eyes?

Published in Amigurumi Techniques 2 mins read

Safety eyes are secured by pushing a backing (washer) onto the post of the eye on the inside of the amigurumi or plush. Once the backing is on, it's designed to be very difficult to remove, providing a secure attachment.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Insert the Eye: Push the post of the safety eye through the fabric of your amigurumi in the desired location.

  2. Attach the Backing: From inside the amigurumi, firmly push the plastic washer (backing) onto the post of the safety eye. You should hear or feel a "click" to ensure it's properly attached. This click indicates the washer is securely locked onto the eye's post.

  3. Verify Security: Once the backing is on, try (gently!) to pull the eye out from the front. It should be very difficult or impossible to remove. This confirms that the eye is securely fastened. Remember that once the backing is on it's hard to remove.

Important Considerations:

  • Placement is Key: Choose the eye placement carefully before attaching the backing, as it's difficult to reposition the eye afterward.

  • Force Required: Attaching the backing can require a significant amount of force. Some people use tools to help press the washer onto the post.

  • Permanent Fixture: Be aware that safety eyes are designed to be permanent. Removing them can damage the amigurumi.
