Partial pressure measurement devices are instruments used to determine the individual pressure exerted by each gas component within a mixture of gases. The most commonly used instrument for this purpose is the quadrupole mass spectrometer.

Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer for Partial Pressure Measurement

The quadrupole mass spectrometer has become the industry standard for partial pressure analysis due to its versatility and accuracy. It essentially functions as a hot-cathode extractor ionization gauge with an added electrostatic mass filter. Here's a breakdown of how it works:

  1. Ionization: Gas molecules enter the spectrometer's vacuum chamber and are ionized by an electron beam emitted from a hot filament (cathode). This process creates positively charged ions.

  2. Mass Filtering: The generated ions are then passed through a quadrupole mass filter. This filter consists of four parallel rods arranged in a square. Radio frequency (RF) and direct current (DC) voltages are applied to these rods. By carefully controlling these voltages, the filter allows only ions of a specific mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) to pass through to the detector. All other ions are deflected and neutralized.

  3. Detection: The ions that successfully pass through the quadrupole filter strike a detector, such as a Faraday cup or an electron multiplier. The detector measures the ion current, which is proportional to the partial pressure of the corresponding gas component.

  4. Spectrum Analysis: By scanning the RF and DC voltages applied to the quadrupole rods, the spectrometer can sequentially measure the ion current for different m/z values, generating a mass spectrum. This spectrum reveals the composition of the gas mixture and the partial pressure of each gas component.

  • Residual Gas Analyzers (RGAs): RGAs are generally quadrupole mass spectrometers optimized for detecting residual gases in vacuum systems.
  • Optical Absorption Spectroscopy: Measures the absorption of light by specific gases, which can be used to determine their partial pressures.
  • Gas Chromatography (GC) with Mass Spectrometry (MS): GC separates gas components, and MS identifies and quantifies them.
  • Capacitance Manometers with Selective Membranes: Specific membranes allow only certain gases to pass through, enabling the measurement of their partial pressure.
