What is Mesoappendix?

Published in Anatomy 1 min read

The mesoappendix is the mesentery that attaches the appendix to the ileum. It's essentially a fold of peritoneum that suspends the appendix within the abdominal cavity.

Details about the Mesoappendix

The mesoappendix is crucial for supporting the appendix and providing a pathway for its blood supply and nerve innervation. Key features include:

  • Connection: It connects the appendix to the ileum (the final section of the small intestine).
  • Extent: The mesoappendix may extend all the way to the tip of the appendix.
  • Contents: It encloses several important structures:
    • Appendicular artery and vein (blood supply)
    • Lymphatic vessels (drainage and immune function)
    • Nerves (control of the appendix)
    • Often a lymph node

Clinical Significance

During an appendectomy (surgical removal of the appendix), the mesoappendix is carefully ligated (tied off) to control bleeding from the appendicular artery and vein before the appendix is removed. Inflammation of the appendix (appendicitis) can also affect the mesoappendix, leading to its inflammation (mesoappendicitis) and contributing to abdominal pain.
