The skin membrane, also known as the cutaneous membrane, is the technical term for our skin. It's the outermost layer of our body and serves as a protective barrier against physical, chemical, and biological damage.
The skin is composed of two main layers:
- Epidermis: The outer layer, made of epithelial tissue, provides a waterproof barrier and helps protect against infection.
- Dermis: The inner layer, made of connective tissue, provides strength and flexibility to the skin. It also contains blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles.
The skin plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature, sensing touch, and producing vitamin D.
