Where are Salivary Glands?

Published in Anatomy 1 min read

Salivary glands are located in your mouth and surrounding areas. There are three main pairs of these glands:

Major Salivary Glands: Location & Function

  • Parotid Glands: These are the largest salivary glands. They're situated in front of and just below each ear. [Source: Multiple sources including Cleveland Clinic, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center]
  • Submandibular Glands: Located below the jaw, these glands contribute significantly to saliva production. [Source: Multiple sources]
  • Sublingual Glands: These smaller glands lie under the tongue. [Source: National Cancer Institute]

In addition to these major glands, numerous smaller salivary glands are scattered throughout the mouth's lining, contributing to overall saliva production. The saliva produced lubricates the mouth, aids in swallowing and digestion, and protects teeth. [Source: Cleveland Clinic]

Damage or insufficient function of these glands can impact taste, chewing, swallowing, and increase the risk of dental problems. [Source: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research]

While most salivary gland tumors occur in the parotid gland, they can develop in any salivary gland. [Source: Mayo Clinic]
