Taxila still retains its name; it has not been renamed. Taxila (Takhshasila in antiquity) is the Greek approximation of its original name. The site of the first city at Taxila is known as Bhir Mound. Taxila was a significant site of Buddhist Gandhara, especially after Ashoka's rule and during the Kushan era in the 1st century CE.
