Which animal's kidney is similar to the human?

Published in Animal Anatomy 1 min read

The kidney of a pig is remarkably similar to the human kidney.

While other animals' organs may share some similarities with human kidneys, the pig kidney is noted for its significant resemblance, making it a candidate for xenotransplantation (transplantation of organs from one species to another). However, a major challenge remains: preventing the human immune system from rejecting the pig kidney. The human immune system's reaction to pig organs is significantly more intense than its reaction to human organs, posing a substantial hurdle in successful transplantation. This is due to the differences in surface antigens between the two species. Overcoming this rejection response is the subject of ongoing research.
