Are chickens left handed?

Published in Animal Behavior 1 min read

Chickens are not left-handed; they exhibit "footedness," and are typically right-footed, analogous to right-handedness in humans.

While chickens don't have "hands" in the human sense, they do show a preference for using one foot over the other. This preference is similar to human handedness or paw preference in other animals. Studies suggest that most chickens favor their right foot, just as most humans favor their right hand. This preference can be observed in various activities, such as scratching, foraging, and maneuvering objects. So, instead of being left-handed, they are predominantly right-footed.
