What is CDT injection?

Published in Animal Health 2 mins read

CDT injection is a vaccine that protects small ruminants, such as sheep and goats, against Clostridium perfringens types C and D (overeating disease) and Clostridium tetani (tetanus). These bacteria are commonly found in the environment, including the soil.

Why is CDT Important?

These Clostridium bacteria can cause serious and often fatal diseases in sheep and goats.

  • Clostridium perfringens Types C and D (Overeating Disease, Pulpy Kidney): These bacteria produce toxins that can cause severe intestinal damage, leading to rapid death. Type D is often associated with animals consuming large amounts of grain or lush pasture.
  • Clostridium tetani (Tetanus, Lockjaw): This bacterium produces a neurotoxin that affects the nervous system, causing muscle stiffness, spasms, and ultimately, death. Tetanus often enters through wounds, such as those from castration, docking, or vaccination.

How the CDT Vaccine Works:

The CDT vaccine stimulates the animal's immune system to produce antibodies against the toxins produced by these Clostridium bacteria. These antibodies provide protection against disease.

Who Needs CDT?

  • Lambs and Kids: Young animals are particularly susceptible to these diseases.
  • Adult Sheep and Goats: Regular booster shots are needed to maintain immunity.
  • Pregnant Ewes and Does: Vaccinating pregnant females provides passive immunity to their offspring through colostrum (first milk).

How to Administer the CDT Vaccine:

Consult with a veterinarian for specific recommendations on vaccination schedules and administration techniques. Generally, the vaccine is given subcutaneously (under the skin).

Benefits of CDT Vaccination:

  • Prevents potentially fatal diseases in sheep and goats.
  • Reduces economic losses due to death and illness.
  • Protects animal welfare.
  • Easy to administer and relatively inexpensive.
