Piglets, especially newborns, freeze because they lack brown fat, a specialized tissue that other mammals use to rapidly generate heat. Consequently, they rely heavily on glucose for maintaining their body temperature in cold environments.

The Role of Brown Fat

Brown fat is crucial for non-shivering thermogenesis, a process where fat is burned to produce heat. Because newborn piglets don't have significant amounts of brown fat, they are unable to efficiently utilize this mechanism.

Glucose Dependency

Without brown fat, piglets must depend on glucose metabolism to stay warm. They need a consistent supply of glucose, which they typically obtain from the sow's milk. If they cannot consume enough milk, their blood glucose levels drop, leading to hypothermia and, potentially, freezing.

Management Strategies to Prevent Piglets from Freezing:

  • Provide Warm Housing: Use heat lamps, supplementary heating, or insulated housing.
  • Minimize Drafts: Block drafts to reduce heat loss.
  • Dry Piglets After Birth: Wet piglets lose heat more rapidly.
  • Ensure Adequate Sow Nutrition: A well-nourished sow produces better quality and quantity of milk.

Therefore, a piglet's inability to thermoregulate efficiently stems from the lack of brown fat and a subsequent reliance on glucose, making them vulnerable to freezing in cold conditions without adequate management.
