What is AITFL?

Published in Ankle Anatomy 1 min read

AITFL stands for anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament.

This ligament is one of the key ligaments that stabilizes the ankle joint, specifically a "high ankle sprain." Unlike the more commonly injured ligaments on the outside of the ankle, the AITFL is located above the ankle joint. It connects the tibia (shin bone) and fibula (smaller bone in the lower leg) on the front side of the ankle. When damaged, it can cause significant pain and instability in the ankle. In addition to the AITFL, another ligament, the PITFL (posterior inferior tibiofibular ligament) also contributes to high ankle stability.
