What is the Old Iron Called?

Published in Antique Tools 1 min read

The old iron was called a sadiron or sad iron, and sometimes a flat iron.

Historically, before the advent of electric irons, clothing and other fabrics were smoothed using heated metal irons. These early irons, primarily used from the 17th century onward, went by several names, each reflecting either their material, construction, or purpose.

Types of Old Irons:

  • Sadiron/Sad Iron: This was the most common name. The term "sad" comes from Middle English, meaning "solid" or "heavy," reflecting the iron's construction from a thick slab of cast iron. These irons were typically triangular and came with a handle.

  • Flat Iron: This term is also frequently used, simply describing the iron's flat, smooth surface used for pressing.

These irons were heated directly by a fire or on a stove. Because of the direct heat source, handling could be challenging, often requiring the use of thick cloths or insulated handles.
