How does Apple Key work?

Published in Apple Ecosystem 2 mins read

Apple Key, or Home Key, allows you to unlock compatible doors and locks using your iPhone or Apple Watch. It works using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

Here's a breakdown of how it works:

  • Digital Key Storage: Your Home Key is stored securely in the Secure Element of your iPhone or Apple Watch. This is the same technology that Apple uses for Apple Pay, providing a high level of security.
  • NFC Communication: When you bring your iPhone or Apple Watch near a compatible smart lock, the devices communicate via NFC. NFC is a short-range wireless technology that allows for secure data transfer.
  • Authentication: The smart lock communicates with your Apple device, requesting authentication. Your device verifies your identity (often using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode if those aren't available).
  • Unlocking: Once authentication is successful, the smart lock unlocks.
  • Express Mode (Optional): Express Mode allows you to unlock the door without needing to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. With Express Mode enabled, simply hold your device near the lock.
  • Sharing Access: You can use the Home app on your iPhone or iPad to share Home Keys with other people, granting them access to your home or building.

In Summary: Apple Key leverages NFC technology to securely unlock compatible smart locks using your iPhone or Apple Watch after authenticating your identity. It can also function in Express Mode for even quicker access.
