How to Use Apple NameDrop?

Published in Apple Features 3 mins read

Using Apple NameDrop is a quick and intuitive way to share your contact information with another person using their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Simple Steps to Use NameDrop

The primary method for using NameDrop involves bringing two compatible devices close together. Here's how it works:

  • Bring Devices Close: Hold the display of your iPhone a few centimeters from the top of the other person's iPhone or Apple Watch. This proximity is key to initiating the connection.
  • Wait for Prompt: Continue holding your devices near each other until NameDrop appears on both screens. You will see a visual indication on both devices prompting you to share your contact information.
  • Choose What to Share: Once NameDrop appears, you'll see options on your screen regarding what contact information you want to share. This typically includes your Contact Poster and phone number or email.
  • Share or Receive: You can choose to only receive the other person's contact information or to share and receive. Tap the desired option on your screen.
  • Confirmation: Your chosen contact information will be shared instantly.

What is NameDrop?

NameDrop is a feature powered by AirDrop that allows users to quickly share their contact information, including a personalized Contact Poster, by simply bringing their iPhones or an iPhone and Apple Watch close together. It eliminates the need to manually type or dictate contact details.

Requirements for Using NameDrop

To use NameDrop, both devices must meet certain criteria:

  • Compatible Devices: Both users need compatible Apple devices. NameDrop works between iPhones running iOS 17 or later, and between an iPhone and an Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later.
  • Software Version: Ensure your iPhone is updated to iOS 17 or later, and your Apple Watch (if used for receiving) is updated to watchOS 10 or later.
  • AirDrop Enabled: AirDrop must be enabled on both devices for NameDrop to function.
  • Contact Card Set Up: You should have your own contact card set up in the Contacts app with the information you wish to share, including a Contact Poster.

Sharing Options

When using NameDrop, you have control over the exchange:

  • Share & Receive: Exchange your contact information (including your Contact Poster) with the other person and receive theirs.
  • Receive Only: Receive the other person's contact information and Contact Poster without sharing yours in return.

This feature provides a modern, quick, and visually appealing way to swap contact details in person.
