How do I add an app password to my Apple password?

Published in Apple Security 2 mins read

An app-specific password allows you to use apps with your Apple ID that don't support two-factor authentication. Here's how to create one:

  1. Sign in to your Apple Account: Go to account.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID and password.
  2. Access Security Settings: In the "Sign-In and Security" section, locate and select "App-Specific Passwords." If you don't see this option, it means you either don't have two-factor authentication enabled, or app-specific passwords are not available for your account. Two-factor authentication is a prerequisite.
  3. Generate a New Password: Select "Generate an app-specific password." This will guide you through a series of steps on your screen. You'll typically be asked to provide a label for the password (e.g., "My Email App" or "Calendar Sync") so you can remember which app it's for.
  4. Use the Password: After generating the password, make sure to copy it. This is the password you will use when prompted by the specific app. Remember, this password is only for that particular application and is different from your main Apple ID password.
  5. Considerations: App-specific passwords enhance security by isolating access to each application. If one app becomes compromised, your main Apple ID and other apps are not affected. You can revoke app-specific passwords at any time via your Apple ID account page.
