How to Re-Pair an Apple Watch?

Published in Apple Watch 3 mins read

Re-pairing your Apple Watch involves unpairing it first and then going through the pairing process again. Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Unpair Your Apple Watch

There are a few ways to unpair your Apple Watch:

  • From Your iPhone:

    1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
    2. Tap the My Watch tab.
    3. Tap All Watches at the top of the screen.
    4. Tap the (i) information icon next to the watch you want to unpair.
    5. Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
    6. If you have a cellular plan, choose whether to keep or remove it. If you plan to re-pair, you can keep it.
    7. Enter your Apple ID password to disable Activation Lock.
    8. Confirm that you want to unpair. This will create a backup of your watch data.
  • From Your Apple Watch (if you don't have your iPhone):

    1. On your watch, open the Settings app.
    2. Tap General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
    3. Enter your passcode if prompted.
    4. Choose whether to keep or remove your cellular plan (if applicable).
    5. Enter your Apple ID password to disable Activation Lock.

Step 2: Pair Your Apple Watch Again

  1. Turn on your Apple Watch: If it's off, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Bring your iPhone close to your Apple Watch: The pairing screen should appear on your iPhone. If it doesn't, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap Start Pairing.
  3. Choose how to pair:
    • Use your iPhone's camera: Position your iPhone over the animation displayed on your Apple Watch.
    • Pair manually: Tap "Pair Manually" on your iPhone and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions: You'll be prompted to choose whether to restore from a backup or set up as new. Choose the backup you created when you unpaired the watch for a seamless experience, or set up as new if you prefer a fresh start.
  5. Enter your Apple ID password if prompted.
  6. Create a passcode on your Apple Watch.
  7. Choose your settings: Select whether you want to share your location, enable route tracking, and customize other settings.
  8. Wait for the syncing process to complete: This may take some time, depending on the amount of data being transferred. Keep your iPhone and Apple Watch close to each other during this process.

Alternative Method: Resetting the Watch

If you are having trouble with the standard unpairing/re-pairing process, you can try resetting the Apple Watch directly:

  1. Force Restart: Press and hold both the Digital Crown and the side button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons.
  2. Reset from Watch: After the watch restarts, firmly press the screen or press and hold the Digital Crown.
  3. Tap "Reset".
  4. Pair: After your watch resets, you can pair it with your iPhone using the steps above.
