How can I secure my washing machine?

Published in Appliance Maintenance 3 mins read

To secure your washing machine, especially when moving, the most important step is to secure the drum to prevent damage to the suspension system. This is primarily done using transit bolts.

Here's a breakdown of how to properly secure your washing machine:

1. Use Transit Bolts (Shipping Bolts)

  • What they are: Transit bolts are metal rods specifically designed to stabilize the washing machine drum during transport.

  • How to use them:

    1. Locate the slots at the rear of your washing machine. These are where the transit bolts are inserted.
    2. Insert the transit bolts into the slots, ensuring they are fully tightened. Usually, you'll need a wrench or pliers to tighten them sufficiently. The goal is to restrict the drum's movement as much as possible.
    3. If you don't have the original transit bolts, you can often purchase replacements from the manufacturer or appliance parts stores. Make sure you get the correct size and type for your specific washing machine model.
  • Why it's important: Without transit bolts, the drum can move excessively during transport. This can damage the drum's suspension system, potentially leading to costly repairs or even rendering the washing machine unusable.

2. Retain Original Packaging (If Possible)

  • If you still have the original box and packing materials, use them. They are designed to provide the best possible protection during transport.

3. Drain All Water

  • Make sure the washing machine is completely drained of water before moving it. Any remaining water can add weight and potentially leak, causing damage.

4. Secure the Door and Hoses

  • Tape the washing machine door shut to prevent it from opening during transport. Also, detach the water hoses and drain hose, and secure them to the washing machine to prevent them from swinging around and causing damage. You can use tape or zip ties for this.

5. Protect the Exterior

  • Wrap the washing machine in blankets or moving pads to protect the exterior from scratches and dents.

6. Move Carefully

  • Use a dolly or hand truck to move the washing machine. Lift with your legs, not your back, and avoid bumping or dropping it.

Important Note: Don't forget to remove the transit bolts before using the washing machine after you move it to its new location. Failing to do so can severely damage the machine when you start a wash cycle. Store the bolts in a safe place so you have them if you need to move the washing machine again.
